Missing Family while traveling/during COVID-19

Home is where the heart is. No matter how wanderlust a person is. No matter how one loves to travel, at the end of the journey, they realize that home is where his or her path leads. Travel teaches many lessons to an individual. Adventurous trips help the person to understand how strong he or she is, and sightseeing trips help to get a break from the usual schedule and charge up an individual. Educational or exploring a culture can turn an individual’s life into a new person. Whatever the type of travel, it is to learn something and lead a better life at home.

The trip becomes interesting only when a person finds a friend and that friend reminds a friend back in his native. So there is no denying that a person cannot skip the homesick at any travel type. Overcoming homesickness also makes a person stronger.

I’m an overseas student from Australia, and i’m missing home! I’m currently stuck here (in LA) in this pandemic situation.

These methods have helped me overcome homesickness during this pandemic….

Prepare yourself before traveling

The missing is always a battle between a person and his or her mind. When you plan for a trip, you know well that you will miss the home for all the comforts it gives to you. So, before booking the tickets, start to build a mindset to stay strong without breaking the joy of the travel. Prepare yourself to get adjusted to whatever the hurdles you are supposed to see soon. May it be you missing your mom’s cooking or a silly fight with your siblings or hanging out with your friends. You know what you love most and what you will miss most during traveling, sit in a corner, and practice feeling how it is going to feel once you miss them. By practicing it, you are not going to get a new missing feeling in the new place where you are up to explore. Say yourself, that you are going to travel to be a better person either financially, or with good education, or attaining peace, and to live a better life with your family back home.

Live the moment

When you are traveling and put in a different place which is new to you, keep asking yourself, how many have got the same chance? Or is there any other chance that you are going to get the same chance again like this? That makes you forget about what you miss and helps you to live in the moment.

Stay in touch with your loved one

You might miss your mom’s food, but you can get the recipe. Technology helps you to stay in touch with your loved ones, make a video call to your mom and ask for the recipe, even though it is never going to taste like your mom’s food. While cooking, both of you are going to have fun despite the distance. You might miss spending time with friends, but you get to chat and share your experience through calls.

Missing during special occasions

Missing during special days of the year like birthday, family functions as a wedding to the near or special ones, and special days like Christmas can be a trigger point to create homesickness. There is no escaping from this feeling. Even here, the mindset plays the key. While talking to your family, if they come to know that you are missing them, it might turn their mood off. Instead, smile and show that you are missing the home and yet managing to have fun with friends around. It makes the mood better for everyone. While traveling, you say to yourself that there is always the next year to celebrate with your family.

Get help from the local friends and their families

You should have the ability to make friends faster. Be open-minded and communicate well with your surrounding people and make friends. Even though you are strong enough to manage your life on your own, you are a human being, who needs to share your feelings, who could get sick, who needs love and affection. Find a friend that suits you and make him/her a part of your life. Becoming one person in their family makes life easier while traveling. You get support from them as your family member support you. This method suits the students and the working professionals staying abroad.

Focus on your work

Focusing on what you are doing is also a distraction from being homesick. Instead of yearning for not what you have, make a fruitful effort to get the most out of the aim of your travel.

Make fitness a distraction element

Getting fit helps you to focus more. Yoga, Meditation, and exercises are a good distraction element and make you a happier person. If you have decided to travel, make fitness practice a routine, that makes you enjoy a peaceful life.

Even though people get homesick while traveling and when they are back home they are again going to be travel sick for sure. The key is, wherever you are; always try to live in the moment.
